Armstrong to Separate Flooring and Ceiling Businesses

Armstrong World Industries board has unanimously approved a plan to separate the companys flooring business from its ceilings (building products) business, creating two independent publicly traded companies. According to the company, the separation is intended to be a tax-free spin-off of the flooring business to the companys shareholders, and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2016. Armstrong believes that separating its flooring and ceilings businesses will create two strong companies in its respective markets that each will benefit from increased strategic focus, streamlined operating structures and improved capital allocation. Each public company will offer investors a distinct and compelling investment opportunity based on different operating and financial models, end-market business cycles and strategic growth opportunities. The tradeshow floor of the National Wood Flooring Associations (NWFA) Wood Flooring Expo, taking place April 28 to May 1 in St. Louis, has sold out, with 462 booths registered to 257 companies. We really value early indicators, such as this, to let us know we are on track. The industry has come together, especially in recent years, and set an increasingly high bar for the expo. We aim to exceed it, said Michael Martin, NWFAs president and CEO. During the past three years, we have enjoyed significant growth. With the continued support and confidence of our members, the NWFA is poised for another successful year. MAPEI Americas has partnered with Build Health International to donate tile and stone installation systems materials in order to help construct a new maternity ward at St. Boniface Hospital in Fond-des-Blancs, Haiti. According to a representative from Boston architectural firm, Payette, An 8,700-square-foot addition is planned to accommodate four outpatient exam/ultrasound rooms, six postpartum beds, six pathology observation beds, five labor and delivery birthing beds, eight NICU bassinets, along with the required patient and staff clinical support. In addition to the maternity and neonatal service, a 5,000-square-foot training center will be provided for community health and activity development. Over a three-day period, more than 84 exhibitors at The International Surface Event (TISE) in Las Vegas, donated 140,765 lbs. of gently used floor covering, stone and tile products.Mountain Re-Source Center (MRC) and its subsidiary, Tile Partners for Humanity, along with Informa Exhibitions U.S., led this initiative with joint participation and support from the Freeman Cos., United Services and the Mandalay Bay Convention Center. These sustainability allies collected a total of 571,725 lbs. of commodity materials that would have otherwise been collected as trash, ending up in a landfill. Officials from the Mandalay Bay Convention Center provided a comprehensive post-show report confirming that as a result of the effort, 80% of the total waste generated from the show was recycled. Recycled materials included cardboard, carpet, carpet pads, concrete, metal, aluminum, paper, plastics, wood crates and pallets.
